I have whirl'd with the earth at the dawning,
When the sky was a vaporous flame; I have seen the dark universe yawning, Where the black planets roll without aim; Where they roll in their horror unheeded, without knowledge or lustre or name 'Nemesis' - H.P. Lovecraft |

The Story Itself
Post Mortem is the story of the Department of Occult Research, investigating the sudden disappearance of a colleague undercover with a violent doomsday cult known as The Circle. More disturbingly, The Circle's depraved apostles have also mysteriously vanished, leaving behind only sparse clues that point to the truth of their last moments at the cult's compound. Thanks to undercover Agent Philips' logs and journal entries, DOOR has assembled a dossier on The Circle and deemed the recovery of Philips a priority assignment. The Department knows that The Circle was a major player in the city's black market, though given their backwater compound it remains unclear what exactly the cult was spending its hard earned money on. The Department knows that The Circle consorted with an other-dimensional entity that called itself Adra Meleke, a daemonic presence that claimed to dwell in a place called the fifth outer dimension. The Department knows that The Circle believed humanity descended from daemons that ruled the skies during the earth's early days, teaching homo sapiens language, mathematics, tool making, and agricultural techniques. The Circle wished to 'learn to fly once more,' to burst from the coils of their mortal cocoons and join the dark stars where their fabled ancestors still reside. The Department knows that The Circle was ready, willing, and able to commit gross acts of violence and depravity to achieve its ultimate goals. The Department has no idea why, how, or where they've gone. |
What Do You Mean By 'Horror'? Post Mortem is heavily inspired by the near-future/science fiction and Lovecraftian horror genres, and incorporates and marries themes from both throughout the story. Participants should not expect tentacled monsters, spaceships (it's not THAT kind of sci-fi, folks), or special effects raining from the trees. Participants should expect props that incorporate modern audio-visual technology, scent, lighting, and ambient sound used to create an atmosphere more conducive to roleplaying horror. The story also uses roleplay techniques that can generate eerie or disturbing encounters. Over the course of the story, our goal is to hold up frightening truths and revelations that make the player, and their character, shudder, reflect, and lose themselves to the narrative and the dark world of Post Mortem. The storytellers want to take your character from a place of security, assuredness, and reason and cross the threshold into doubt, disaster, spiritual ruin, death and transformation. This is a story set squarely in a hopeless genre with neither salvation nor heroes. |
